There is a little personal story to this set. In Japan so often you get this "Alice in wonderland" effect: curiosity leads you to go off track - as a mate and I did while going for an evening walk in the residental area close to our home in Tokyo - and suddenly you find yourself in a completely different surrounding. We followed this narrow inconspicuous path, in a swift change from subburban to forest like ambience, it lead us to this hidden temple. There was this mystical, magical, slightly uncanny but almost sacred atmosphere in the air. It was just a small temple ground, but felt like being thrown from everyday life into this little magical bubble.
With different lights and effects this 2D hand drawn layerd set shows the journey of different moods in this mystical place.

Playing with effects in this 2D hand drawn layerd set , such aslight beams, back light, animated elements, camera movement etc. The gallery shows both digitial frames and still as well as the actual physical model of traditional 2D hand drawn animation.

Mount Fuji

This set is fully painted by hand in watercolour on paper before editing on PC. Hiking Mt Fuji over night to see the sunrise, was one of my favorite experiences in Japan. Therefore I wanted to create this background shown by day and night.

The third image is an actual 3D model of the tangible cut 7 layers as in the original daylight design. In a blackbox with lighting placed in the center from above the scene appears as during night.

Love the effects you can create with one design just by choosing different lighting, focus, and camera angles.

The last picture shows a digital film still of the test video, this is how the mountain looks at night time in summer, when you look down: hundreds of lights like on a Christmas tree from the people following up the rocky path - truly magical.
